Getting around the Arena:
Basic terms used during riding that describe how and where to move in the arena.
Dressage Arena:
The standardized space in which we ride dressage. Short size is 20 by 40 meters, long size is 20 by 60
meters. Centerline:
Centerline is the imaginary line that runs down the middle of the arena (A to C). In a standard arena
centerline is 10 meters from the rail on both sides.
Quarterline:
Both Quarterlines are half way between (5 meters) Centerline and the rail
Rail & Inside Rail:
The Rail runs around the outside edge of the arena. Inside Rail is about 2-4 meters towards the inside of
the rail.
Arena letters:
Developed in the early 1900s to standardize dressage, associated with modern dressage and test riding.
Basic letters include M, B, F, A, K, E, H, C. A good way to remember these is "My Best Friend Adam
Keeps Every Horse Clean."
Diagonal:
The imaginary line which runs from one long side to another between M and K or H and F.
Short Diagonal:
The imaginary line which runs from one long side to another, always shorter than a regular diagonal. Most
often from M to E or V, and/or H to B or F (etc).
