Eyelet Slouchy Beret HandSpun Version
|
Fashion forwards, wear-anywhere! A really fun and versatile Beret/Slouch that is fast and easy to knit and makes the most of your hand-spun yarn.
Size: One Size (If you want it bigger adjust stitch count, or knit on large needles).
Materials: ~100 yards handspun yarn. I used my own hand-painted BFL top (Morning Shadows colorway) which I spun classic worsted with a short forwards draw. It is a slightly thick and thin yarn, DK weight with 11wpi.
This pattern is so versatile that it could easily be made with a lighter or heavier yarn.
Needles- US size 10.5 16" circular needles, or if you are a glutton for punishment, like myself, use 5 dpns, US size 10.5.

Useful Notes about the Pattern:
This pattern is not written in the detailed step by step guide I usually provide, but rather as a general guideline for you to easily modify to suit your yarn and style. I will be including another pattern using regular yarn that is written out more explicitly.
If you do use a set of dpns be very careful not to loose sts off the ends, the yo's in particular love to jump off and are hard to pick back up again!

To Make:
CO 68 sts. Join for working in the rnd, being careful not to twist sts, and place
marker (pm) after first st to denote beg of rnd, and pm's to divide the hat in to 4
even 'segments' (approx 17sts between each marker). Or, if you are using dpns
divide sts evenly on 4 needles.
Brim- K2, p2, rep to end.
Cont. in this patt. for ~ 3 rounds, or until brim is 2-3" from cast on edge.
Inc. round- *P3, m1, rep. from * to end. (Approx 89 sts)
Next round- *K2tog, yo, rep. from * to end.
Next round- Purl.
Next round- *YO, k2tog, rep. from * to end.
Next round- Purl.
These 4 rounds form pattern, knit 1 more round in this patt.
Inc. round- *P6, m1, rep. from * to end. (Approx 103 sts).
(If you would like your hat to be extra large, knit 3 more rounds, and on a
P round inc by *P8, m1, rep from * to end.)
Cont. in patt. until piece measures 4-4.5" from cast on edge. On a yo
round decrease at end of each 'segment' as denoted by markers (or at end
of each dpn). Knit to last 3 or 4 sts, then yo, k3tog. Rep. at end of each
'segment'.
Cont. in patt. for 3 rounds.
Decrease round- Dec. as before and continue to decrease in this manner on
each yo round for 4 more rounds.
Next Purl Round- P to last 2 sts of each 'segment' and p2tog.
Do another yo dec. round, and another purl decrease round.
Next round- *YO, k3tog, cont. to last 3 sts in 'segment' , yo, k3tog, sm, yo,
k3tog, rep from * to end.
Next round- *P2tog, p to last 2 sts in segment, p2tog, sm, p2tog, rep. from *
to end.
(If you have done an extra increase row, rep. these last 2 rows once more).
Next round- *yo, k3tog, rep. from * to end.
Next round- *p2tog, p, rep from * to end.
Next round- *k2tog, rep from * to end.
By this point you should have approx. 12 sts on your needle, break yarn,
and with tapestry needle sew threw remaining sts (twice for good
measure), tighten and secure. Sew in ends, enjoy!
